Description
On Wednesday 14 October, Dub Me Always is pleased to present a stalwart of the community, none other than Massive International, with Tony at the controls.
Massive International is an offshoot of the music promotion cooperative Big Broad and Massive, established in Hackney in 1983. BBM was the fundraising arm of Hackney Youth in Progress, a politically sensitive grassroots organisation which had campaigned against the victimization and lack of opportunities available to young people, in particular the Black youth of the area. Most importantly, the group worked along with other organisations to develop cultural awareness and a sense of self, presenting alternates to the lure off crime. The group hosted sound system dances, youth clubs, social clubs, stage shows, filmmaking workshops, and open-air festivals and carnivals, despite resistance from the local constabulary.
After BBM’s funding bodies ceased to exist, the group continued fundraising efforts by running a stall at the Notting Hill Carnival. Then, in 1992, Massive International London was formed as a record stall and music merchandise distribution company. Due to popular demand, Massive International soon embarked on a tour of Europe’s major reggae festivals, spreading the positive vibes of reggae music and Rastarafi livity in countries such as Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Holland and Switzerland. Massive International has also accompanied touring reggae bands such as Culture, Misty in Roots, Shabba Ranks and Ninja Man, among others.
Massive International’s record stall at Camden Lock has drawn customers from far and wide and is a favourite for selectors. Preferring to play at community events rather than chasing glory or fame, Tony insists that he doesn’t need dub plate specials to keep his sessions unique, such is the endless well of original reggae vinyl at his disposal. Which vinyl nuggets with Tony pull out of the bag on the night? There’s only one way to find out…
